Senators – Do Your Job!

President Trump has nominated the Hon. Neil M. Gorsuch to be a United States Supreme Court Justice. Democratic Senators are opposing this nomination because they are mad that Republican Senators refused to conduct hearings last year on President Obama’s nominee, the Hon. Merrick B. Garland. The Republicans were wrong then and the Democrats are wrong now.

Article II Section 2 of the United States Constitution says the President “shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate shall appoint … judges of the Supreme Court….”

The job of the President is to nominate and President Trump has done his job. The job of the Senate is to give advice and consent regarding the appointment of Supreme Court Justices. Senators should consider and evaluate the experience and competence of the nominee. If there is any legitimate concern about competence Senators should withhold their consent. However, Senators should not withhold consent merely because the President making the nomination is from the opposing political party. Sadly, that is what the Republican Senators did last year and that is what the Democratic Senators are doing now. Both parties are wrong and their actions hurt our country.

We need our elected representatives to stop the political grandstanding. I’d like to see them learn how to work together to solve problems to benefit all Americans.
